Air Handling Unit in Pharmaceutical Industry

Air Handling Unit (AHU) in the pharmaceutical industry plays a critical role by maintaining clean, controlled and contamination-free environments essential for drug manufacturing. Because pharmaceutical production requires strict adherence to quality and regulatory standards, AHUs help ensure precise control over air quality, temperature, humidity and pressure inside production areas, laboratories, sterile zones and packaging sections.

AHU in Pharma Industry

Refcon Engineering – a leading manufacturer of AHU in the pharma industry, has a reputation in the pharmaceutical industry for its product durability and reliability. We offer quality and advanced technology based air handling solutions at a very affordable price range.

AHU Full Form in Pharma

Pharmaceutical AHU ensures that the indoor environment remains hygienic, stable and compliant with GMP, WHO and FDA standards. It maintains controlled temperature and humidity to safeguard the quality of raw materials, intermediates and final products. By providing proper air movement and maintaining positive or negative pressure, AHUs support operations such as tablet manufacturing, injectable formulation, capsule filling, ointment preparation and sterile drug processing.

Our AHUs are made with GMP-compliant design/corrosion-resistant materials. Its HEPA Filtration typically has 99.97% efficiency for 0.3-micron particles and maintains proper ACPH as per cleanroom classification.

Importance of AHU in the Pharmaceutical Industry

Pharmaceutical manufacturing demands a contamination-free environment. AHUs ensure:

  • Controlled Air Quality: Removal of airborne particles, microorganisms, and contaminants.
  • Stable Temperature & Humidity: Critical for product stability and operator comfort.
  • Pressure Differential: Maintains positive or negative pressure zones to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Compliance: Meets WHO, GMP, and FDA guidelines for cleanroom air management.

Working Principle of AHU in Pharma Industry

  • Air Intake: Fresh air is drawn from outside and mixed with a portion of return air.
  • Filtration: The mixed air passes through multiple stages of filters—Pre-filters, Fine filters, and HEPA filters—to remove dust and microorganisms.
  • Cooling/Heating: The air passes over cooling or heating coils to achieve desired temperature.
  • Humidification/Dehumidification: Humidity is adjusted as per process needs using humidifiers or dehumidifiers.
  • Air Distribution: The conditioned air is supplied to different areas through ductwork, maintaining appropriate air changes per hour (ACPH).
  • Exhaust & Recirculation: Return air is partially exhausted and partially recirculated after filtration.

Types of Air Handling Units Used in Pharma

  • Single Zone AHU: For small cleanrooms or specific controlled zones.
  • Multi-Zone AHU: Used where different zones require separate temperature or humidity conditions.
  • Modular AHU: Compact and easy to maintain, ideal for space-constrained pharma facilities.
  • Custom-Built AHU: Designed as per specific cleanroom requirements and process needs.
